Have decided to get off the tanker/freighter in NZ and spend some time there with a new friend I found on the tanker. She was the cook, and since I love to cook, I found myself helping her more and more, and we hit it off. Well, not at first; she thought I was a normal "ugly" American, and she would not even give a second look, but when she got hurt one day (sprained her ankle when the ship took an ugly pitch up - believe it was a small rouge swell), I told the Captain that I would take over cooking for Addy (short for Adeleine). He said it was up to her, and I had to convince her.

I went to her cabin and sat there for over 3 hours while she "grilled" me on what I knew about cooking, and when I convinced her that I knew how to cook, she reluctantly allowed me into her kitchen. She stood there over my shoulder watching everything I did. We used her menu for the first day, and then I told her I was going to add some US Southwestern flavor since most of the passengers where Americans. She said no, but I did it anyway, and the passengers loved it They gave her rave reviews.

Now what I think won her over was when I told everyone it was her menu and recipes and I was just following orders. I think I moved beyond the "ugly" American in her eyes since I didnapos;t try to usurp her position or authority and gave her all the cudos. ;-) From there it was quickly associates, friends, good friends, nurse (me helping her with her ankle), and then about a week later, well, letapos;s say that we shared more than a plate of borscht. ;-)

When she told me that she was getting off in NZ since she couldnapos;t get her ankle repaired at sea, I said, well, I am going to miss you, and she asked if I wanted to see NZ with her? Thatapos;s the long and short of it. We are in NZ, and she does know about my medical condition since I told her before the borscht.
